Ask Jewell

Q. As a newlywed, I am starting to experience trust issues with my husband. I think it is because of past relationships & also fear of divorce because we both come from broken homes so the mask of perfection is coming off and we are seeing each other for who we are. What can we do?

A. My first suggestion is for you to honestly share with your husband the fears and concerns that you have about your relationship. I am also wondering is there anything going on (indicators from your husband) that would cause you to be suspicious when you otherwise would not be. If you check your motives and the Holy Spirit is prompting you to keep your antennas up then ask questions.  Consider asking to put accountability measures (i.e. calling one another when your going to be late, etc) in place until you feel comfortable and/or work through the trust issues you are having in your relationship. If everything checks out ok, and your man is and has been faithful to your marriage vows, then you must make a commitment to seek God on overcoming your fears. There are many scriptures in God’s word that deal with fear (ie. Romans 8:15, and 1st Timothy 1:7 are two). Just like medicine take a daily dose of God’s word in this area by reading, mediating, and speaking these scriptures until you have conquered your fears.
